Basics

What is danale.com about? What do you use it for?

This is explained on the About page, but basically: I use Danale.com for whatever the heck I want to use it for. It’s mostly for my art and doodles, my base of operations for selling or promoting my art, but I’ll also use it for any other random thing I find interesting. I’m hoping to add reviews of other artists’ work soon or things like movie reviews, game screen shots, etc. Pretty much anything I’m into!

I need to get in touch with you. How can I contact you?

Filling out the form on the Contact page is your best bet, since it goes directly to my e-mail. Otherwise you can leave a comment pretty much anywhere on this site and I’ll get in touch with you!

Art

Your art is horrible! Your art is awesome! How can I tell you what I think of your art?

On the art page, if you scroll to the very bottom, there is an option available for comments. I am very receptive to critique, so go ahead and speak your mind! I’m a glutton for praise, as well.

How often do you update your art?

I try to create new drawings, designs or other graphics whenever time and energy allows. Sometimes I churn out several pieces in a week, sometimes I go through a drought of months without producing anything. It all depends.

One of the reasons I enjoy taking on commissions is because it forces me to complete the artwork. If I don’t finish it, and do it well, then I lose money, and I lose my reputation in the online art communities I’m a part of. So even if you don’t see me posting anything new in a while, that doesn’t mean I’ve given up or have lost my skill or anything. Sometimes you just need to nudge me with a $20 bill. :-)

What materials do you use?

My favorite is Micron inking pens on smooth Bristol stock. My second fave is regular ballpoint pen on nearly any kind of paper. After that I like to dabble in cheap markers, Prismacolor pencils, and a variety of mixed media. I like to think I’m good at coloring in Photoshop as well.

Do you only draw animals?

I get asked this a lot. The short answer is no. The long answer is, yeah, kinda. I feel I am very bad at drawing humans because, compared to animals, humans have a very flat face. It’s easy to sketch the details of a wolf snout at nearly any angle, but a human face is hard to depict in regular pen and ink without it starting to look like a rushed Marvel comic. At least for me.

The longer answer is, I like animals and fantasy creatures a lot. The human eye is naturally drawn to things that are interesting, out of the ordinary, and with over 6 billion human beings on the planet, anything besides a human can be very interesting.

I try to practice human faces and expressions when time allows.

Do you take requests?

Yes and no. I occasionally take requests in the rare chance I stream my art live on Ustream. I will also exceptionally take requests if you comment in a unique way or present me with a unique character. Also, I try to honor people’s birthdays as often as I can with quick, cute doodles.

Web Design

Who designed your web site?

My web site utilizes Wordpress web development software (it’s not that high-tech, really) with the Cellar Heat theme by Evan Eckard. I cut open the theme, re-created all of the graphics and much of the style, customized a touch of the layout, and now other than the basic skeleton being the same, this site is uniquely my creation. So the short answer is, I designed my site.

Do you design other sites? What kind of sites can you make?

I am currently employed as a graphic and web designer, and I love the work a lot. Currently I can build any kind of “static” page, and I can re-design and customize Wordpress themes. I am hoping to expand my existing knowledge of web design even more to get into more high-tech, interactive stuff like flash and javascript.

Are you available for hire to design web sites?

Absolutely! If you are looking for a simple, static information-based site, or a more dynamic, interactive blog-based site, I am definitely someone who can help. Just send a note my way with what you have in mind and we’ll see if we can work something out.

Dana Larson

How long have you been posting art online or involved in art/anthropomorphic/fantasy communities online?

My good friend Rochelle Steder introduced me to the world of anthropomorphic creatures as well as the site DeviantArt.com in mid 2002. Before then, my art only existed on the sides of high school notebooks. Thanks to Rochelle, I discovered all kinds of new materials to use and subjects to draw. I discovered I actually do have real art talent, other people in the world enjoy seeing the things I create, and that it’s ok and even healthy to spend an entire afternoon glued to a piece of paper. I definitely thank her for that.

You draw a lot of anthropomorphic art. I mean, a lot. Are you a furry?

The short answer is no. The long answer is, uh, no. As mentioned above, I love animals, anthropomorphic and fantasy creatures, and I love to draw them. Therefore, a lot of the art I produce can be classified as “furry” by some. In addition, because I primarily draw animalistic creatures, I draw in a lot of fans who are themselves furries or enjoy furry artwork. These same people will often commission me for more furry art, thus adding to the collection. It’s a vicious cycle.

The longer answer is… I’m something of a furry. I have always been drawn to animal cartoons, stories and movies more than ones with a more “human” focus. I’ve always been something of a computer nerd, a light gamer, a fantasy story writer, and a big fan of costumes and costuming (especially on Halloween!). So by these terms, I’m arguably part of the furry fandom. However, in some circles the term “furry” explicitly denotes a reference to a sexual fetish, often seen as a sub-culture of the Leather or BDSM fetish. For some, “furry” is how to define pornographic content featuring people in costumes or drawn anthropomorphic characters. This definition absolutely does not describe me, my interests or my behavior. I have never drawn anything pornographic in my life, nor do I have any intention to, provided I never find myself living in a cardboard box desperate for cash.

I do draw “sexy” characters on occasion, but you can blame the influence of Disney for that.

Joking aside, while I am a nerd at heart, I am a fairly normal, well-adjusted and sociable individual. You don’t have to worry about anything perverted or overtly weird coming from me.
